Here Comes WhatsApp Business Verification

Updated: Aug 7, 2019

If you see a green badge like this

next to a contact’s name, it means that the phone number of this contact belongs to a business account verified by WhatsApp.  In an FAQ on its site, WhatsApp says it “is exploring ways for you to communicate with the businesses that matter to you.” This update is similar to the grey badge that Facebook, WhatsApp’s parent company, has for verified business pages.

According to the same FAQ, “WhatsApp will also let you know when you start talking to a business via yellow messages inside a chat. There is no way to delete these messages from the chat. If you already have a business’s phone number saved in your address book, the name you will see is the name you have saved in your address book. If you don’t have a business’s phone number saved in your address book, the name you will see is the name the business has chosen for themselves.” You’ll be able to stop talking to a business by blocking it the same way you block other users.

By adding verified business accounts, WhatsApp seems to be opening the door for monetization. Whether this means that business will have to pay to be verified or whether businesses will be able to start advertising is yet to be seen. There are without a doubt a large number of businesses that would like to advertise to WhatsApps’ massive audience of 1 billion actvie daily users. WhatsApp is continuing to add new users and features. Just last week WhatsApp announced a new, colorful addition to Status updates.
